AN EVENING WITH DR. WILLIAM GLASSER Treating
Mental Health as a Public Health Problem How to Put Choice Theory to Work in Your Life
Personally and Professionally

This is a unique opportunity to hear one of the world’s leading psychiatrists, Dr. William Glasser, present his latest thinking on the method of psychotherapy he created in 1965 which is now taught all over the world. Initially termed Reality Therapy and renamed Choice Theory in 2001, his approach is non-traditional – and many would say controversial – in that he does not believe in the concept of mental illness unless there is something organically wrong with the brain that can be confirmed by a pathologist.
Very early in his career, Glasser came to the conclusion that genetically, we are social creatures who need each other. However, the cause of almost all psychological symptoms (that we typically term mental illness and often treat with drugs) is our inability to get along with the important people in our lives.
Choice Theory is the basis for all of Glasser’s suggestions for improving relationships among families, in schools, in the workplace and in the community. It states that all we do is behave, that almost all behavior is chosen, and that we are driven by our genes to satisfy five basic needs: survival, love and belonging, power, freedom and fun. In practice, the most important need is love and belonging, as closeness and connectedness with the people we care about is a requisite for satisfying all of the needs.
Dr. Glasser is the author of over 20 books including Reality Therapy (1965), Schools Without Failure (1969), Choice Theory (1998), Getting Together and Staying Together (2000), and Warning: Psychiatry Can Be Hazardous to Your Mental Health (2003). Many of these books will be available for purchase at his lecture and Dr. Glasser will be available to sign books during the evening.
